Woodland Whispers Squirrel: Mosaic Crochet Square

WOODLAND WHISPERS SERIES
Woodland Whispers Squirrel
a little autumn magic, one stitch at a time...
Bring a little woodland mischief to your crochet with Woodland Whispers Squirrel, the third pattern in my Woodland Whispers collection of six nature-inspired mosaic crochet squares.
Inspired by those busy little woodland characters gathering their treasures for winter, Squirrel celebrates the curious, playful side of autumn. Picture a little squirrel scampering through fallen leaves, collecting acorns and finding the perfect hiding place for its latest discovery. It's that lovely feeling of a woodland full of life, even as the days grow shorter, that inspired this design.
If you're a fan of autumn walks, woodland wildlife or simply love a crochet project with a little personality, Squirrel is a lovely way to bring some nature-inspired magic to your hook.
The square is worked in the round using mosaic crochet, with minimal ends to weave in. So pop the kettle on, choose your favourite autumn colours and settle in for a cosy crochet session!

PART 3 OF 6
The Woodland Whispers Collection
Six nature-inspired mosaic crochet squares, all the same size, designed to be combined for a beautiful blanket or enjoyed as standalone makes.
About the Woodland Whispers Squirrel pattern
Woodland Whispers Squirrel is a 30 cm (approximately 12-inch) mosaic crochet square featuring a woodland squirrel motif.
Designed to capture the charm of autumn wildlife, this square is a lovely addition to the Woodland Whispers collection. Use traditional woodland colours for a natural look, or experiment with something unexpected to give your squirrel a personality all of its own.
Warm chestnut browns, rusty oranges, golden yellows and creamy neutrals, or perhaps a more contemporary combination of deep teal and soft ivory. Your colour choices can completely change the feel of the finished square.
And, of course, you don't have to save it for a blanket! Squirrel would look lovely as a standalone piece or incorporated into a smaller handmade project.
What can you make with Squirrel?
Although designed as a square, Squirrel is versatile enough for lots of different projects.
Blankets and throws: Combine Squirrel with the other Woodland Whispers designs for a blanket full of autumn character.
Cushions: Create a statement cushion featuring your favourite woodland animal.
Wall hangings: Display your finished square as a little piece of crochet art.
Bags and smaller projects: Incorporate the motif into a project that lets your love of woodland wildlife shine.
Each square measures approximately 30 cm when made to gauge, making it easier to plan a larger project using multiple squares.
I think the real fun comes when you start imagining how all six designs might look together. A blanket featuring a fox, maple leaf, squirrel, mushroom, acorn and pine cone would be such a lovely celebration of the woodland in autumn!

Yarn recommendations for your Squirrel square
One of the things I love about mosaic crochet is how much the colour choices can change the finished design.
For Squirrel, you could lean into the traditional colours of autumn with warm rust, chestnut, caramel and cream. Alternatively, choose a deep forest green or teal alongside a contrasting neutral for a more modern woodland look.
My yarn tip: Whichever colours you choose, make sure there's enough contrast between them. Mosaic crochet relies on the difference between your colours to bring the design to life, so a little planning before you start can make all the difference.

You can use yarn from your stash or explore these options:

You can absolutely use yarn from your stash, too! Just choose a suitable DK-weight yarn and remember that changing yarn may affect your finished square size and the amount required.
Which crochet hook should you use?
The pattern calls for a 3.5 mm hook, but the right hook can make your crochet time feel much more comfortable.
I like to recommend two options: one for everyday crochet and another for those times when you fancy treating yourself to something a little special.
My everyday crochet hook
A reliable ergonomic hook is a lovely option for your everyday crochet projects. Look for a comfortable grip that suits the way you hold your hook, especially if you like bigger crochet projects.

My recommendation: Sirdar Soft Aluminium Crochet Hook
My premium crochet hook
If you fancy adding something special to your crochet collection, a premium hook can be a lovely investment in your crafting kit — or a treat for a fellow crocheter.

My recommendation: Polished Raspberry Streamline Metal Crochet Hook
Whichever hook you choose, make sure it is 3.5 mm to start with, then check your gauge against the pattern instructions.
Meet the Woodland Whispers collection
Woodland Whispers is a collection of six mosaic crochet patterns inspired by the beauty of the natural world in autumn.
Each design has its own woodland-inspired motif, while the squares share a consistent finished size so you can bring them together in a larger project.
The collection includes:
Woodland Whispers Fox — the first pattern in the series.
Woodland Whispers Maple — a beautiful maple leaf design.
Woodland Whispers Squirrel — another woodland-inspired motif.
Woodland Whispers Mushroom — a little touch of woodland magic.
Woodland Whispers Acorn — inspired by one of autumn's classic treasures.
Woodland Whispers Pine Cone — completing the collection with another natural woodland motif.
Each square measures approximately 30 cm and is worked in the round, making the designs lovely individual projects as well as potential building blocks for a larger blanket.
You don't have to make all six. Choose your favourites, make one as a gift, or collect the entire series and create something that brings all the designs together.
