Woodland Whispers Maple: Mosaic Crochet Square

WOODLAND WHISPERS SERIES
Woodland Whispers Maple
a little autumn magic, one stitch at a time...
Bring a little woodland magic to your crochet with Woodland Whispers Maple, the second pattern in my Woodland Whispers collection of six nature-inspired mosaic crochet squares.
Inspired by the beautiful colours and shapes of autumn, Maple features a striking maple leaf surrounded by delicate woodland-inspired details. It’s a lovely project for those cosy crochet evenings when the days are getting shorter and all you want to do is settle down with your favourite yarn and hook.
The best part? This square is worked in the round, with minimal ends to weave in, so you can spend more time enjoying your crochet and less time finishing it!
Whether you’re making a blanket filled with autumn-inspired squares or looking for a smaller project, Maple is a beautiful way to bring the woodland into your home.

PART 2 OF 6
The Woodland Whispers Collection
Six nature-inspired mosaic crochet squares, all the same size, designed to be combined for a beautiful blanket or enjoyed as standalone makes.
About the Woodland Whispers Maple pattern
Woodland Whispers Maple is a 30 cm (approximately 12-inch) mosaic crochet square featuring a beautiful maple leaf motif.
The design uses two contrasting colours of DK yarn to create the pattern, making it a great opportunity to experiment with colour combinations. This sample uses the gorgeous autumnal tones of King Cole Riot in Mermaid, paired with a contrasting light colour.
I love how the colours work together to bring out the leaf design, but you can make this square your own by choosing shades that suit your style.
Imagine a whole blanket of woodland-inspired squares in autumn reds, burnt oranges, golden yellows and earthy greens. Or keep things simple with a neutral background and a bold contrasting leaf.
What can you make with Maple?
Although designed as a square, this pattern is versatile enough for lots of different projects.
Blankets and throws: Combine Maple with the other Woodland Whispers squares to create a nature-inspired blanket.
Cushions: Make a statement cushion with a beautiful botanical design.
Wall hangings: Display your finished square as a little piece of crochet art.
Smaller projects: Incorporate the motif into bags and other creative crochet makes.

Yarn recommendations for your Maple square
For my sample, I used King Cole Riot DK in Mermaid (3761) alongside King Cole Pricewise DK in a contrasting light shade.

King Cole Riot has lovely colour variation, making it a great choice when you want a little extra interest in your finished square. Pairing it with a solid colour helps the maple leaf design stand out.
My yarn tip: Choose colours with enough contrast between them. Mosaic crochet relies on the difference between your colours to make the design clear, so even the prettiest shades may not work together if they’re too similar in tone.

You can absolutely use yarn from your stash, too! Just choose a suitable DK-weight yarn and remember that changing yarn may affect your finished square size and the amount required.
Which crochet hook should you use?
The pattern calls for a 3.5 mm hook, but choosing a hook is about more than just the size. Comfort, grip and how the hook feels in your hand can make a real difference when you're working on a project.
I like to recommend two options so you can choose what suits your budget and crochet style.
My everyday crochet hook
Looking for a reliable hook for your everyday crochet projects? An ergonomic hook can be a lovely choice, especially if you enjoy longer crochet sessions.

My recommendation: Sirdar Soft Aluminium Crochet Hook
My premium crochet hook
If you fancy treating yourself to something a little special, a premium hook can make a lovely addition to your crochet collection. This is also a great option if you're looking for a gift for a fellow crocheter.

My recommendation: Polished Raspberry Streamline Metal Crochet Hook
Whichever hook you choose, make sure it is 3.5 mm to start with, then check your gauge against the pattern instructions.
Meet the Woodland Whispers collection
Woodland Whispers is a collection of six mosaic crochet patterns inspired by the beauty of the natural world in autumn.
Each design has its own woodland-inspired motif, while the squares share a consistent finished size so you can bring them together in a larger project.
The collection includes:
Woodland Whispers Fox — the first pattern in the series.
Woodland Whispers Maple — a beautiful maple leaf design.
Woodland Whispers Squirrel — another woodland-inspired motif.
Woodland Whispers Mushroom — a little touch of woodland magic.
Woodland Whispers Acorn — inspired by one of autumn's classic treasures.
Woodland Whispers Pine Cone — completing the collection with another natural woodland motif.
Each square measures approximately 30 cm and is worked in the round, making the designs lovely individual projects as well as potential building blocks for a larger blanket.
You don't have to make all six. Choose your favourites, make one as a gift, or collect the entire series and create something that brings all the designs together.
