Woodland Whispers: Meet the Fox 🦊

There’s something about autumn that makes you want to slow down.

The evenings draw in, the leaves begin to change, and suddenly the world feels a little bit prettier.

Walk through a woodland at this time of year and you might spot something moving between the trees…

A flick of a tail.

A pair of watchful eyes.

And then, it's gone.

Meet Fox — the first design in my brand-new Woodland Whispers crochet series.

A tiny bit of woodland magic, one square at a time

Woodland Whispers was inspired by those tiny moments that make autumn feel special.

A fox slipping through the undergrowth, or a leaf turning golden before it falls...the quiet rustle of something small moving beneath the trees.

Rather than creating one large, complicated design, I wanted to capture these little woodland moments in individual crochet squares — each one with its own character, but designed to sit beautifully alongside the others.

And Fox is where our journey begins.

Meet Fox 🦊

The Fox square is the first Woodland Whispers design, featuring a recognisable woodland fox at its centre, surrounded by details inspired by the textures and shapes of the forest floor.

It's worked in the round, creating a satisfying rhythm as the design develops, with plenty of little details to keep things interesting without making the project unnecessarily complicated.

The finished square measures approximately 30 cm, making it perfect for blankets and larger projects — but you certainly don't have to stop there.

Why not use your Fox as:

  • part of a woodland-inspired blanket

  • a cushion front

  • a bag or tote

  • a wall hanging

  • a seasonal decoration

  • or just a standalone piece of crochet art?

And because it's a square, there's plenty of scope to mix and match it with your favourite patterns too.

Who is it for?

I'd describe Fox as an Intermediate crochet pattern, although adventurous beginners who are comfortable reading a crochet pattern and trying something new are very welcome to give it a go.

You don't need to crochet an entire blanket to enjoy it.

One square can be a lovely little project all on its own.

But…

Fox is only the beginning.

Six little whispers from the woodland

Over the coming weeks, more Woodland Whispers designs will begin to appear.

Each one takes its inspiration from something you might discover on an autumn woodland walk.

Some will be creatures.

Some will be plants.

Some are little pieces of woodland treasure that you might normally walk straight past.

Together, they'll create a collection of six coordinating squares that can be joined into something much bigger.

I'm deliberately keeping some of the details under wraps for now…

But I can tell you that Fox has five woodland friends waiting to follow.

So if you love autumn crochet, woodland themes, or the idea of gradually building a blanket from individual squares, this is one series you'll want to keep an eye on.

Choosing your yarn

For my Fox sample, I wanted colours that felt warm and autumnal without making the finished square overly complicated.

The design uses a Main Colour and a Contrast Colour, allowing the fox and the surrounding pattern to stand out clearly.

If you're looking for something similar for your own Fox, here are a few of my go-to options.

🧶 Main Colour

For the main background colour, look for a smooth DK yarn with good stitch definition. A warm orange, soft red or deep brown works beautifully if you want the woodland motif to really stand out.

🍂 Contrast Colour

For the contrast, an autumnal cream, or bright white can give your Fox a wonderfully seasonal feel.

Of course, there's absolutely no reason to stick to traditional autumn colours.

Imagine Fox in:

navy + cream

deep green + gold

plum + blush

or even a completely unexpected colour combination.

That's one of my favourite things about crochet — the same pattern can look completely different depending on the colours you choose.

Your crochet hook matters too

A good crochet hook can make such a difference when you're working on a detailed project.

If you're crocheting for a few hours at a time, comfort is particularly important.

đź’ś The comfortable choice

If you prefer a lightweight, comfortable hook that's easy to hold for longer periods, this is the kind of hook I'd reach for when settling down with a Woodland Whispers square.

Perfect for a cosy evening of crochet, a cup of tea and perhaps your favourite autumn programme in the background.

✨ The fancy choice

And then there's the treat-yourself option.

If beautiful crochet tools make you just as happy as beautiful yarn, a premium hook can turn an ordinary crochet session into something that feels a little more special.

Because sometimes the project deserves a fancy hook.

And sometimes… we just want one!

Ready to meet Fox?

If you've been looking for a crochet project with a little bit of autumn magic, Fox is available now.

It's the first little piece of the Woodland Whispers story — and I'd love to see where you take yours.

Choose your colours.

Pick your hook.

Make yourself a cup of something warm.

And settle down for a little woodland adventure.

And if you enjoy making Fox, keep an eye out for the next Woodland Whispers design.

There are five more little woodland secrets still to come…

Which one do you think will appear next? 🍂
